The Ultimate Quest

Tonight is time to address the Ultimate Quest for our Heroes:

A long journey out of the darkness of dungeons to a whole new Era is waiting for them.

Leaving the good old dungeon to enter the Unholy Temple

Even though they could reach the open air, forces of evil were still waiting for them:

To eventually face the scariest of all the monsters:

Most probably the largest game we've ever played:

To eventually reach the Ultimate reward:

Could any of you guess what is enclosed in the parcel ?

Ambush on the way back to the village

On their way back to the village carrying the gold chests to the Prince Magnus, the heroes were ambushed by a warband composed of Orcs and Goblins lead by a Fimir
The Barbarian and the Elf promptly attacked the flanking Goblins while the Archers dealt with the Orcs.

It was a fierce but short battle easily won by the heroes.
Maybe next time should the Evil Wizard summon more creatures... Why not wolf riders ? Or even an Ogre ?

This short battle was played on a custom board made up of the back of a frame on which I have pasted tiles found on the internet (unfortunately I can't remember where I've found them).
Be careful when you try to print and paste different tiles : it came out that almost none of them have the same exact size.
The road is just sand pasted over the tiles and the road block made of a couple of wooden sticks.

Otherwise the game was played according to the standard Heroquest rules.

Prince Magnus' Gold

Tonight the 4 girls were tasked to retrieve the stolen Prince Magnus' Gold chests.

I think it is one of the first times the four agreed to play together.
The elder one (10 yo) was playing with her experienced Elve, the second and fourth (9 yo and 6 yo) were playing Archers and the third (7 yo), who plays less often, was playing the Barbarian.

I have a couple of custom rules, one of which being that you can only search for treasures in a room where there is furniture. To compensate, I am using the custom equipment list that can be found in the character creation chapter of OpenQuest.

As a consequence, experienced characters are a bit strong but it is more fun for the girls.

More important is that the players are getting better and better after each game. They are really starting to play as a team, not competing with each other.
Yet the men-at-arm are still left behind too often as you can see on the picture above.
But the best point was that the two youngest have managed to stay focused on the game for almost 45 minutes. Which is an absolute record and a great victory!

And to answer your question : yes they were victorious and the gold was returned to the Prince!

This blog needs you !

If you have wandered around this blog you may have noticed that it lacks a lot of illustration.
If you have free of rights pictures that you think might be relevant, please do not hesitate to submit.
You may also take pictures of painted minis that would make suitable illustration.

By the way, I am also looking for painted minis to grow up the ranks of both my monsters and heroes. Should you have some for sale, do not hesitate to leave a comment below.

Thank you all!

First battle

After a couple of learning skirmishes, I've pkayed the first battle with all the units against my 6 years old kid.
We only didn't use battlefield modifications such as the tower or the hedges.

The first point is that this game is perfectly playable by a young player since the rules are quite easy.
I was also very pleased to notice that the game system is very well balanced. And the victory remained uncertain for a long time.

The more tricky part is the figures management. Even though I had removed the flags to prevent any accident, some figures are often falling from their bases and the kids (and father) must be very careful not to break anything when moving around the table.

The last point is that the game lasted around 45 minutes which is, I think 15 minutes too much for the young kid to stay focused.
In conclusion, she enjoyed the game (even though she was defeated) which is the most important.

Next steps are playing with the eldr ones, including all the elements and finally having the kids playing one against the other with dad as a game master...

To be continued...

Out of the dungeon, into battle.

Received, checked repaired and ready to battle.

I finally got it ! The original Battle Masters in French version.
Almost complete, it just lacks 2 haleberdiers (if someone has them and is ready to sell them, I may be interested...) and a couple of tokens.

I aloso had to fix a few broken parts, which is quite not surprising considering it is a very old game.
Much of the flags had to be repaired and moved to their correct colored pole.

Eventually I could try with the kids and the game passed the final exam : kids approved !

Chances are some of the figures are soon going to venture in the dungeons. They would fit perfectly OpenQuest !
