OpenQuest - Chapter 1 : Character Creation

Second test game : What OpenQuest can Heroquest cannot
For this game I was testing the the new Character sheet and open air scenes
The objective was to liberate a small town invaded by goblins.
This illustrates one of the main advantage of OpenQuest on Heroquest : creating large and modular open areas without having to print all the landscape.

First OpenQuest game
Today was the first time I tried OpenQuest with the kids. It was also the opportunity to test a lot of custom material and rules. Here is the report.
Firstly it was all about converting the players to OpenQuest. Which was easily achieved after modifying the Movement, Attack and Defense abilities. It required once more to bring changes to the equipment rules in order to match with Heroquest statistics. Leather armor now gives 2 Defense points and Chain Mail 3, as written on the card. I think a brad new Character Sheet is required.
Then, the first in game step was to convert moving points to centimeters according to the scale (1 pt = 3 cm). Measuring on the board with the tape is in deed a bit difficult without hitting furniture elements. Careful moves are required. But the kids managed to handle that quickly.
Moreover, there are many cases where measuring is unnecessary as the distance might be quite obviously below he moving capacity of the figure. Moving to a nearby creature and attacking it, for instance.
As a conclusion it seems that the system works. Another improvement could be to build some scaled sticks to immediately report the distance on the board (just like Warhammer Fantasy Battle).
During this game I could also confront my new Dark Elves to the hero. They appeared to be too weak for experienced heroes. One solution could be to implement a leveling system for the Monsters (one more item on my "todo" list).
I also had to bring minor change to the crossbow man. Anyway I'll have to convert those monsters to OpenQuest.
First quest with one player was a success.
For the second quest, the first hero was assisted by a second one. And two heroes were not too much to free the Musician from the Lizard-men.
During this quest I also implemented my Learning Spell rule saying that a player can earn a magic scroll from a spell for the next quest provided that he is able to copy it faultlessly.
In the end the heroes were successful and they can now head toward the next adventure with their new men-at-arm : the Musician and his magic songs.
To be continued...

OpenQuest : Teaser
OpenQuest will be a free set of rules based on Heroquest. Its main purpose is to play on an open continuous board without squares.
It is also introducing new rules to integrate various figures from other games thanks to a character creation system.

New Hero : The Bretonnian Knight
Today I'm introducing a new Hero : The Bretonnian Knight. A slow but powerful hero for the players. I'm sorry for the French version but my kids aren't so good at English for now.
Please let me know and comment if you play with him.
It will be my last custom figure for a while because I'm about to start working on a new project related to HeroQuest. Stay tuned (for this purpose you can subscribe to this Blog)...

A new Men-at-Arm : The musician
I've just created a new Men-at-Arm to help the players in their quests : The Musician.
At first I had thought of him as a player character. But he turned out to be too weak and not really interesting to play. Yet, as a support unit he can be very useful.
He comes with three Magic Songs (played as usual Spells) :

I haven't illustrated them for now so, if you have some suggestions (copyright free) you are welcome...
